Re: Compudata Hard-drive CS-1057

If you really don't have a spare floppy disc handy then you might be struggling. But if you have DOS Plus discs 2, 3 or 4 there might be a spare bit of space on one of them, and the PC might read them. Otherwise I think you will have to get hold of a blank floppy or two (I can help gladly but there ...

Re: Mystery device on eBay

It is interesting, I wonder what the insides look like?

I can't see that it connects to a Beeb (or anything else apart from the mains) so it isn't a BBC peripheral as such. Maybe it was just somebody's idea of an ultra-modern (at the time) egg-timer?

Re: Compudata Hard-drive CS-1057

Ooh version 1.01, I think that's an unknown version. The File Server requires the second processor to be running so it won't work, you just get noise through the speaker usually as it runs at &400 and overwrites the sound buffer. Any combination of Beeb and 6502 second processor can be used - Ma...

Re: Compudata Hard-drive CS-1057

It's interesting because the boot sequence shows that it tries to run the Acorn print server, which requires a separate ROM, so as it isn't present, there are Bad command errors, and then it runs the file server. It is almost certainly the Acorn Level 3 file server of a version which detects the tim...

I use Ubuntu, with xfce4 desktop as standard, and Dolphin as my file manager of choice, although it isn't part of xfce4 and has to be installed separately. Re: SRAM PCB modification difficulties

It isn't necessary to modify the PCB, you can instead modify the chip by soldering flying wires to the pins and attaching these permanently (by soldering) or temporarily (using a spring-loaded probe clip or similar) to the points on the PCB. That way there's no permanent change to your BBC, there's ...

Re: Domesday pre-release laserdiscs found

Very interesting. I suppose it stands to reason that there was a test version, or at least an earlier version before the main release because in the first instance software and hardware actually got tested in those days before being dumped on the general public!!!! and they would have needed a worki...

Re: A4 ALA66 A4 Econet module?

They are pretty rare, as the number of responses may hint at! CJE sometimes have them, they may be operating a waiting list for one. Perhaps this is moment for someone to step in and adapt a standard Econet module to fit the A4? Does the A4 have the capability to take an Archimedes podule? An Econet...

Re: ROM for the Acorn IEEE-488 wedge...

I make quite a bit of use of sideways RAM for loading ROM images, and only usually commit them to EPROM if I need a permanent solution.

On my Econet file server, I often have users created specifically for the purpose of loading a particular ROM, eg. *I AM IEEE, *I AM ANFS418, *I AM BASIC4 etc.

Re: ROM for the Acorn IEEE-488 wedge...

I've used IEEEFS0.5 to work with my kit, although to very little avail as you can't do much without an IEEE488 device attached to the adapter. I seem to recall that there is a mistake in the manual which is corrected in JGH's version - possibly there is a thread on here about this. My last set of pi...

Re: L3 Server Changelog

Here's another thought...the earliest version of the FileStore code, in ROM, appears to be 1.31. That's not much of a leap from 1.24 (less so than the previously latest-known version of L3, 1.07). So maybe the FileStore used the same code, tweaked for use with the slightly different hardware.

I've spent the last few weeks trying to get a "huge" hard drive working with my FileStore E01, with SCSI2SD. When I was working with the E01S and SCSI2SD last year I only went as far as recreating a 40MB drive as close as possible to the E40S spec, more to prove it could be done than anyth...

You can use the arrow keys and TAB and RETURN within the Domesday System to simulate the trackerball and buttons.

Also a Master 512 mouse works very nicely.

Re: Anyone got Communicator system software? (Basic has 65816 assembler)

Remember that Communicator is an Econet Station as well. The one at Wakefield didn't have an Econet interface in it but the other one may have. I'm not sure what Econet kit they have down there at the museum but the simplest thing would be to plug it straight into a FileStore and save the ROM dump t...

Re: Getting the FS time

I haven't had the chance to check, I'm not sure doing this trying to read a Level 3 server time would give the same results, but according to p.725 of PRM volume 2, the file server interface returns a 7-byte block to the read time call. So maybe it should be: SYS "NetFS_DoFSOp", 16, fstime...
