Hi Darren, Welcome!

There should be digital copies of CIS COBOL knocking about. If you're looking for ways to get it on to actual media I'm sure the collective we can get you fixed up :)

Re: Saving Programmes on ATOM - current thinking - AtoMMC?

Technically speaking you are right but I have never seen an Atom without this connector. But yes, the connector can be lacking or even worse, mounted at the component side of the board. Mine needed PL8 fitting! :) Gary, when you order an AtomMMC from Charlie, he'll also send you an eprom with it :)...

Re: RISC OS 3.20 ROM's?

I'm assuming ROOL use these for their releases of IOMC 5.2? Where are they getting them from? Perhaps two builds - 2meg/4meg... With the extra room you could stick all the ethernet drivers in there tooalong with the zip filing system and the apps and still probably have room...

Worth considering availability of actual hardware though - 27C800s seem reasonably accessible, 27C160s (or equiv) less so on first glance... :?

You just need to make sure rx/tx go to tx/rx, and rts/cts go to cts/rts. If null isn't working, swap the rx/tx and cts/rts over on one end.

The nested window manager is the most important thing, isn't it? Newlook does seem to slow down the older machines a bit. But as you say, it can be turned off. Depends on space I guess!

No need to drive, it's walk/bus-able. (no, it's not one we went to from replay) About a 20 minute walk:

The flat UP, that's what none of the guides say the flat UP, that's prolly why it was spreading solder everywhere :) Only ever so slightly angled upwards, it's still mostly down. Sort of like 30 degrees. I suspect the liquid flux will be the thing that sorts you out :) (less colons! more healthy!) ...

Hi Russ - just hook it to L11/L12 on the same side, as I said in the facebook thread. Alas, removing it won't show where it's meant to go as it's a multi-layer board and the traces are well buried. If it's been battery gunked, you really need to check the continuity of all the circuits around there,...

Re: Which soldering iron?

I was at 370, lots of low residue liquid flux (no colonoscopy in it), clean tip, nice blob of solder then quickly along the edge and it just all took neatly on each pin.
