Ahhh, now i understand :D I've always thought that's how the discs would be created in the first place. Before the final file is copied over, the protected loader is copied on, which takes up one sector and then the protected file is copied. The necessary information can be taken from the protected ...

There was a file on Superior Software 40/80 track compatible disks called INIT that double-stepped the drives.

All the protected file did was set the load address and length within the osword &7F block, setup the drive, load the data and then execute the code.

It may use a similar protection, but the guide was written with only knowledge of the BBC disks, which use osword &7F to get the data off the disk. Don't know if 5.25" disks are always accessed using 8271 disk controller... if not, osword &72 will be used. I'm sure that'll it'll be rela...

I know the electron doesn't have any timers... that's why i'm up for a challenge  unless it was Partis's use of the timers on Impact! with a nice break in the middle to retrieve the code :D any other timer based stuff and i'd throw in the towel immediately! If it's not timer based, i'm always up for a challenge... but I don't have a disk drive for my electron, my only 3.5" drive is on the master compact. It might be possible to dry hack the code on a BBC. Would it be possible to post the code from the !BOOT file, or the last file that is accessable?

Thanks for the offer, but i've already got the rom image... I need the push switch that freezes the BBC and allows the replay rom to kick in. Think I used to have a flick switch that might have acted in the same way, but that might have been for IceBox.

Glad that you like it... it took me an absolute age to do it, but also kept me off the internet at the time!

Is there any reason you've saved it as a GIF? It's around 5 times bigger than the PNG (I guess that it's not a massively used format?)

On the "File" menu, under "Disc Options", make sure that "Write Protect 0" is unchecked... this enables the program to save the fox profile to disc correctly.

I'd never noticed the 'chunkier' XOR emblem before!
It's the same chunky style on the retail disk version, but the skinnier version on the free (but crippled without purchasing a code) magazine cover version.

Congratulations on getting the timer gubbins fixed! Now if you'd just add a debugger, the decrypted code could be easily cribbed and examined :P
I think that Summer Olympiad's disc loader has some crazy timing related stuff, so i'll see if it works OK with that too.

Thanks for that! Not found the pirate picture yet, but a quick sector snoop found the following

There was a young Pirate named Bates,
Who attempted the Rhumba on skates,
He slipped on his Cutlass
Which rendered him N--less
Now his hardware's more soft than his mates

There is just one BASIC file essential to the running of Ripoff IX, and it can be freely copied.
I also have a copy of Disc Duplicator III. I can put them all onto an SSD image file, if you'd like to PM me an email address, I'll send them to you.

I haven't tried it on other versions, I think Superior softened the protection on later versions, since version 1 proved to be problematical with some DFS systems. ISTR that other versions used standard Superior protection, which could be copied with copiers such as Ripoff IX
