Re: Newbie question regarding first machine

I agree with the previous correspondents completely but I would add to the mix; 1. the price differential between b and Master is not that great overall. A B+ or a Compact will be significantly more expensive. 2. PAGE is set at &E00 on a Master giving more RAM available for the user. 3. the vast...

Re: Recurrent corrupted discs - possible floppy drive fault?

... it also mentions that the format doesn't put any data on the disk so if you want a blank filesystem on a disk then you need to use the original equipment or make a disc image of a blank & format-write that with Omniflop. That is what messes things up. I use OmniFlop a great deal and have al...

Re: Recurrent corrupted discs - possible floppy drive fault?

I believe the OmniFlop manual states to format on the host machine before writing the image. When OmniFlop formats the disk it does not put the correct data onto the disc.

A Pi-DAC+ and matching case for it and my Pi. IMAG1071.jpg This really is an awesome piece of kit and looks exceptionally well made. The Pi-DAC+ is sitting on a Pi2B computer I had spare. It will also work on a Pi3. I tried various ways of driving the Pi-DAC+ board; 1. Raspbian Wheezy and Python - m...

Re: A3020 Restoration

The corrosion can damage PCB tracks and my experience is that the connections to the floppy, hard drive and parallel port can be badly affected on the A3020. All three computers seem to have corrosion still there on the hard drive, 44-pin, connector. It is amazing where the battery gunk goes over t...

Re: What's the worst that could happen?

Suppose I screwed up completely and put a random assortment of 3.3V and 5V signals at anything up to 300MHz on the various pins of a ROM socket. Suppose I was a complete idiot and shorted power to ground. Suppose I ended up double-driving buses everywhere, or driving the data bus to an indeterminat...

Re: Hello!

Welcome. :D By all means clean the contacts on the back of the Electron. When I found my Plus 1 was dodgy, cleaning the contacts solved the problem. Also insert and remove several times to break through any residue on the contacts. RISCOS is great on the Pi 1. Try RISCOS pico for that real retro fee...

Re: A3020 Restoration

You will need to strip the motherboards out of each computer, removing them from the plastic case. The green corrosion material can be cleaned off by using a 50% white vinegar solution and gentle rubbing with a soft toothbrush. Do not rub too hard or the surface mount components may be scrubbed away...

Re: Educational Archive not in STH

Mape 4 is actually MIA from my archive as is Map 1, come to think of it. This is an unusual disc but, given the time frame when it was published, 380Z/480Z and BBC micro were the two most popular computer systems in schools. Images of both would be very useful. I am sure OmniFlop can image the disc ...

The way I use is to download the image onto a Windows XP computer (actually a Windows 7 computer and then transfer the files to the XP one via my Ethernet). Another quick test is to swap the two 6522 VIA chips. If the system VIA is broken the Beeb is left with a continuous tone.
