What to do with a Grundy Newbrain?

Hi Guys, Today I received a Grundy Newbrain from my stepson's father in law as he found it in their loft and has no use for it. Clearly I have a reputation for collecting old computers and so it has found it's way to me.... The machine itself looks good but it's missing one key cap (The graphics key...

I'm not sure about it being the most souped up but this one is my most "complete" and most "connected" Beeb... http://www.retro-kit.co.uk/page.cfm/content/Acorn-BBC-Micro-Model-B/ It has Econet, Disc and Speech fitted along with an ATPL ROM/RAM board and a Datacentre fitted inter...

Re: M3000 vs M5000

So, a few months ago, I bought a Tacx trainer for my bike to mount it for use as an exercise bike... I was told by my surgeon that it would be highly unlikely that I'd ever be able to get on a bike again. Last night, I got on my bike! Two and a half years since I last rode a bike so I'm feeling pret...

It's got a 20-way connector on it but reading the manual and looking at the connector, I'm not sure it's wired for the Beeb just yet but that is a minor issue. This beeb may or may not be worth a look.... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/311816243294?ul_noapp=true Says untested but one of the photo's shows the LED's are on so the caps probably blew whilst having it's photo shoot for Ebay. Still, three switches on the left hand side would indicate more than...

Re: New (to me) A3000

However... even with lcdgamemodes running the A3000 will not display Zarch on the monitor. At the desktop, change to mode 15 or 12, something that would be normally 15kHz and let it letterbox. Then launch Zarch. Zarch has a hard time running when launching from VGA modes. Given it was written when ...

I've just "fixed" the site. I've been adding true multi-lingual content management to the CMS and it seems that if you weren't using en_GB as your default browser language (or other variants of en) then the site would blow up defeating the whole multi-lingual content functionality... For n...

Re: New Acorn 8bit? Should there be one?

It's a lovely looking piece of kit, which is where a lot of the draw is. What I would pay good money for is an Archimedes-style inspired case, with modern outputs (USB, Ethernet, HDMI etc), into which you could just slot a Raspberry Pi Compute module loaded with the current RISC OS version. Like th...

Re: Odd boot issue - Archimedes A440/1

You're welcome. I only know because I've had exactly that pain myself before ;) There's nothing wrong with the later SharedCLibrary itself and if you had that NIC in a RiscPC it'd work great but on the older Arc's, it just doesn't play well with the other modules in RISC OS so a lot of other modules...

Re: Odd boot issue - Archimedes A440/1

Yes, I was right, the SharedCLibrary in the RISC OS ROM is dormant in favour of the one in the NIC. The one in the NIC is too modern to run at boot so needs to be loaded at boot time in the Uniboot scripts which is probably happening somewhere along the line... Try *UNPLUG SharedCLibrary 3 That shou...

Re: Odd boot issue - Archimedes A440/1

If you have EtherH in ROM and in the boot sequence then it's possible that the hang is due to the one in ROM being out of date and clashing with the SharedCLibrary. I've found that to be the case on my machines in the past. In fact, if SharedCLibrary is in the ROM, it's probably worth *UNPLUGging it...
