Re: Any short type-ins for unattended Beebs?

That's neat! Out of curiosity, what's the reason for IFINKEY(2)OR-1 being there? I've tried removing it, and the program runs faster because it isn't waiting for the INKEY(2) delay. I would have thought that pressing a key would cause the program to speed up, but it doesn't seem to. Also, the delay ...

Re: P.R.E.S. AP5 - Original and Re-Design

Mine too - I have just put it together and it looks great! The extra solidity really brings puts the finishing touch to the AP5. As Dave says, it was worth it. One thing to look out for though - one of the M3 nuts wasn't an M3 nut! It was slightly taller than the others, and didn't fit. 1/8" BS...

Re: B+128 keystrip & upper case

=D> Great work on recreating these badges, well done! I have to say though, that Acorn's original efforts in badging the B+128 have to rank as the most amateurish-looking thing the company ever did! And I gather that the engineering inside the machine was pretty dodgy as well. Needless to say, that ...

Re: New Disk Image Editor

Would it be feasible to simply store the load and exec addresses in the filename? When re-importing the file onto a BBC disk image the filename would need to be truncated anyway. Even in the absence of software which can interpret the filename correctly, the user could do it manually to re-create th...

Re: Gotek question around image compatibility

I've been reading the various Gotek threads with interest, and I'm thinking of getting one - but there are several things that I'm still not sure about. I understand that "Gotek" and "HxC" are two variants of floppy emulation hardware, and that the Gotek can run both Flashfloppy ...

Re: Electron PRES 32k Sidways Ram

Hi thanks for the reply When the machine is powered up it reports AP1 present, you then have to press Shift and Break together to load ADFS from disc, the machine should automatically load from the disc into the 32k Ram, its loads so far then locks up. The only ADFS being loaded is Electron E00. Yo...

Re: Electron PRES 32k Sidways Ram

It would be useful if you could explain a couple of things first: 1. What filing system roms do you have in your machine? ie, when you switch it on, does it report Acorn ADFS? 2. Are you trying, but failing to load a pair of ADFS rom images into sideways ram from an ADFS floppy? How are you doing th...

Re: Electron to BBC Conversions

I'd imagine it could be done, but even for partial compatibility it would still be difficult - not the simple writing of a new rom as Commie_user envisaged. As an example of what some Elk games might do, Citadel reads the keyboard in hardware and so uses the rom select register and expects to find a...

Re: Electron to BBC Conversions

That's not how it works unfortunately. The Electron has different hardware to a BBC and is fundamentally not fully compatible with it. Apart from the OS, which has to be different between the two machines for this reason, the only rom in an Electron is Basic 2 which is identical to the BBC version. ...

Re: Osbyte &81 - read machine type

You should ignore Y because different hosts set Y differently, eg BBC returns &FFFF, most other hosts return &00xx. You should use OSBYTE 0 to determine what the host is, and only use OSBYTE &81/INKEY-256 after calling OSBYTE 0 if OSBYTE 0 provides insufficient granularity. Fair enough,...

Re: Osbyte &81 - read machine type

Hmm. What makes you think that Y does have to be set - I am interested.. Partly because that's what both BeebWiki and the Advanced User Guides define the command parameters as. But also because many Osbyte calls conform to a standard format whereby they set the new value of the memory location in q...

Re: Osbyte &81 - read machine type

Yeah this rings a distant bell. There is very little information out there about this and I am yet to find a reason wh(Y) doesn't need to be set whereas in other calls it does. Whiffs of an anomaly to me, too. I think you might have misunderstood my original post. As far as I know, it is necessary ...

Re: Osbyte &81 - read machine type

That's Osbyte 0 Dave, which is similar but subtly different. I get the impression that this is the preferred call to use, so I might just do that in my case. I wasn't so much concerned with how to detect machine type, as I'd got that figured out, but more that Osbyte &81 seemed to have an undocu...

Osbyte &81 - read machine type

I've been looking at the "read machine type" function of Osbyte &81 (ie Osbyte &81,0,&FF) and I've noticed that BeebWiki is by far the best source of information. Specifically: - The BBC Advanced User Guide doesn't mention this function at all (as far as I can see). Surprising ...

Re: Elite source code

That "31 of 31 files on 80 tracks" at the bottom isn't something a standard Acorn DFS produces, is it? That makes me suspect the filing system you're using is something else. Elite has extremely limited VDU handling; it's possible your *CAT command is upsetting it. You're right - for some...

I've managed to follow minwah's instructions and compile Tube Elite myself. :D One thing to add - the version of HIBASIC does need to be HIBASIC 4, otherwise ELITEA crashes with the error "Index at line 2501". This is because HIBASIC3 does not support the JMP (abs,X) addressing mode, where...

Re: Making reasonable progress with a Sudoku solver

Very nice, and I'm reassured to see that a Beeb can do it a lot faster than an Atari (I'm guessing this is a 2MHz vs 1MHz effect). Does the extra memory on a Master help? And also, do you plan to implement the memory use and other stats from the Atari version?
