Re: XOR Author Incorrect...

The copy protection code? The Electron version, at least, uses a standard Kevin Edwards loader.

No worries. It trips me up (and others, too, from experience) from time to time. :)

Re: New version of Centipede for the BBC Micro (in progress)

Try this:

Code: Select all

*RUN CENTI

The star command version only works with things like ROMs and disks, not tapes.

Re: Elkulator compilation on Kubuntu 13.10

I think I encountered this problem before. Either it's related to the version of zlib you have on your system or you need to update the Elkulator sources to include a fix. Which version of zlib do you have installed? I have 1.2.8: $ dpkg -l | grep zlib ii zlib1g:amd64 1:1.2.8.dfsg-2+b1 amd64 compres...

Re: Interesting upcoming talk about digital preservation

The C64 and Apple II seem to be well-covered in terms of cracked software, though hopefully also original versions as well. However, there are still new discoveries even for Commodore followers, so I doubt we're quite there yet. ;)

Interesting upcoming talk about digital preservation

There's an interesting upcoming talk at FOSDEM about Digital Archaeology : This talk covers a ten-point plan outlining the primary issues in digital archaeology. It covers the methods necessary to preserve our computing legacy, the use of emulation, and how open source can help with this endeavour. ...

Re: RisciX tape image.

I've sent the cleaned up versions of the tape image and the one from the CD in flibble's direction, along with the miscellaneous bits from the CD. Hopefully these will satisfy the curiosity of those who wanted to see what a RISC iX 1.13 filesystem looks like. :) I think Boydie expressed an interest ...

Re: Compressed ROMs

I think I would just add a bit of code to those ROMs to look for the correct byte sequence before changing the vector table, so it shouldn't be hard to make them compatible with 64K Electrons. I just made sure that extra code is added for those ROMs that rely on the OS ROM to provide useful byte se...

Re: Compressed ROMs

Hmm. That might break a few games on 64K Electrons. Would there be any games playable at Turbo speeds? Recommendations would always be to run at normal speeds! A check for this could be carried out . . . I think I would just add a bit of code to those ROMs to look for the correct byte sequence befo...

Re: Compressed ROMs

Why would it be odd? How else would the keyboard handler supply the characters that are printed in red on the Electron keyboard keys? Aha! I knew there would be a good reason for the table to be present. I'd forgotten about the keyword shortcuts. Thanks for clearing that up. As to using the keyboar...

Re: Compressed ROMs

However, for some of these, we can place our replacement for *TAPE in memory and still put an address in the vector table that refers to a location in ROM. This works because the Electron's ROM contains data (at &EF97) that just happens to be the valid 6502 instructions for a jump to a reasonab...

I'm currently removing some personal information from both the tape image and the image on the CD. I'll then reassemble both and send the data to flibble for the 4corn RISC iX archive. Looks like I'll be learning about cpio today!

Unzip the attachment somewhere and copy the diff file into the Elkulator directory, then from within that directory type the following: patch -p1 < missing_lm_linking.diff You should see the following output: patching file configure.ac Reconfigure the project with autoreconf If this fails then you m...

Re: RisciX tape image.

I'm wondering about that. It's possible. On the CD that terjeio passed on to me there's another cpio archive. Extracting both of these and diffing them reveals only minor differences, but the one from the CD doesn't give an error when unpacked. So it seems that there's not much on the tape that's di...

Re: RisciX tape image.

Just to make sure I'm doing things right, here's how I'm invoking cpio:

Code: Select all

cpio -i -H odc --make-directories --no-absolute-filenames < ../File1.cpio

This ends with

Code: Select all

cpio: premature end of file

Is that normal? It seems to be part way through a C source file. :?

Re: RisciX tape image.

Hmm. If it's not pristine, it's less useful as a historical artefact, and no more useful than any other image for creating installations? Well, we can still have both. We were more interested in discovering whether the tape contained a different flavour of RISC iX than learning about the people who...

Re: RisciX tape image.

Thanks for taking the process through to completion! I've downloaded the image and will take a closer look at it later in the week. There's a bit of user-specific information in it - home directories and /etc/passwd information, so it might be good to take down the image fairly soon and we can uploa...
