Re: Different idea for highscore season
I would be a little wary of comparing some of the BBC games to the arcade originals, Why? I'm curious about playability differences and how everyone views similar games. It may take a long time to get really good on a game and thus give a proper view, do you mean that? but I like the idea in genera...

Re: Is there a list of games that use co-pros?
Is there a list that has all the Beeb games that use a co-pro? All I know of is Elite. I wrote a reversi board game ca. 1985-1986 (not finished in the sense that it didn't use time to control depth search etc., so depth is fixed) which I modified to run on the 6502 2p in 1987. I had no docs except ...

Different idea for highscore season
So, I have a quite different idea for a high score season, I will not have time this round, doing other things and my BBC is in the attic until these other things that take my time are done. So, perhaps after this season I could make time. I will first talk a bit about general classic gaming and the...

Re: New Disk Image Editor
It's actually pretty unappealing that the .INF technique doesn't cope with spaces in filenames. Also, that the file has a .INF extension but isn't in INF format . Also, that finding a file by name is O(n) on the number of files in the directory. I mean yes, if it's become a de facto standard it has...

Intelligence and common sense / self-preservation don’t necessarily go hand in hand... Correct. And then this: Intelligence is not just about puzzle solving, it is far more complex. This is a topic of my research on influence, manipulation and related issues. I won't yet tell my complete view/analy...

Re: keyboards on PC to play games: Ignored keys with other keys pressed
When I built my arcade controller, it needed one of these: https://www.ultimarc.com/ipac1.html No ghosting, and really configurable, but over £25 if I remember correctly. Lee. Nice one, price is not an issue, a n-key rollover kbd is much more expensive so perhaps a good idea to use something like t...

Re: keyboards on PC to play games: Ignored keys with other keys pressed
I don't know about linux, but I checked A+Z+RETURN on half a dozen keyboards running windows, none would pass on the RETURN in an editor or using the "higher level" APIs, but all would give RETURN using the lower level messages. I suspect that you can get A+Z+RETURN with the "right&q...

Some answers
So, I checked what is possible with PC keyboards and there is apparently nothing that can be done at a lower level with them, but then why did I never have problems with many PC games such as Doom, Descent, Duke 3d, Sega ralley? Well, the answer from unicomp (pckeyboard.com) who make the same keyboa...

Re: keyboards on PC to play games: Ignored keys with other keys pressed
Sorry, I didn't notice who had posted. I think the OS is "protecting you" from possible clashes. If you use DirectInput (just a wrapper on Win32) on windows, you can read A+Z+RETURN, but with normal input, the 2 (3?) key rollover holds onto the RETURN until one of the first two keys have ...

Re: keyboards on PC to play games: Ignored keys with other keys pressed
Most keyboards including the beeb work by having the switches in a grid (matrix) and then for say each row, checking which columns have keys pressed. With this arrangement, if you press three keys on the corners of a rectangle, the fourth key will also be "pressed". Try this on the beeb, ...

keyboards on PC to play games: Ignored keys with other keys pressed
I think this topic doesn't suit other subforums better so I'm asking here as I will perhaps get more response: So, yesterday I tried Defender on mame and immediately recalled why I didn't play it more on the PC when "Williams arcade classics" came out (1995). The issue is my IBM clicky key...

I just <SHIFT><PRTSCRN>, paste into Paint, crop in paint, close paint and paste again. It's cumbersome, quick and easy. Works every time. Hi Folks, There's been a suggestion that any games that have been played during ANY of the previous challenges should not be played again to keep the challenges fresh. Re: Misc BBC/Electron Roms, for checking
No idea if it's Master only. Here's the ROM dump. Does it look any different from the existing dump? I did a bdiff and it's exactly the same as rom 527 (which is the same as roms 525+526), so, this needs looking into as there are now multiple rom images that are the same and it's inconceivable that...

hmm, it's interesting that it's provided for the master, was it master-only? (then perhaps 65c02 opcodes were used, I've not checked the other ch200/chadfs rom dumps for this yet)

Re: High Score Challenge S8 - R10 - Skirmish
First time I played this, aside from briefly trying it out, while going through game disks to see what was on them etc. (long ago, ca. 1995). Scored 57k or so, then a game where I was going perfectly and at 29k all riders gone but 1 bird kept bouncing between the 2 top platforms and so the level cou...

After expanding the SSD of a BCPL system disc into a directory on VDFS I noticed that it now seemed to have more files in than it did originally. Re: Misc BBC/Electron Roms, for checking
As to the ROM images, I checked 525 and 527: 527 is 32K, first half is identical with 525 so is Challenger 2.00, will be interesting to check that out, then the 2nd half of 527 is "CHADFS 300M (C) Slogger 1987". So finally ADFS for the challenger. Might be the first time ADFS becomes pala...

So the Challenger 3 DD BIOS v1.01 + DDCPM v1.01.fdi is the one I was curious about... Is it any different to these ? At that link is also RdDDCPM and WrDDCPM which read and write DDCPM disk images. From looking at the strings in there, it looks the same, so what you have is Z80-CPM Challenger 1.00 ...

Re: High score lists: Old magazines, web
I mentioned having collected high scores from magazines already quite a while ago (though I miss some lists/scans from other magazines than those listed on my page below, that I am sure I made) and I saw again the 30M+ score for Zalaga, mentioned in TMU 1990. But others got to almost the same score...

No, see p. 5. However it's not a game, clearly it is a screen created with the 'telextext pack', the text of that is right beside the picture.

But this is all in the context of people selecting games for the High Score Challenge. For that purpose, it only matters how many people like the game enough that they'll enjoy competing. You hate the game, whereas I'd never even heard of it and still hadn't played it so am completely indifferent. ...
