Re: Wanted: Alpine Software titles for public release

To speed up the testing, has anyone successfully used ALPS on a physical StrongARM that could confirm definitively that it works without issue? I’ve been running ALPS on a 233MHz StrongARM RiscPC with RISC OS 4.02 quite happily - I’ve not done a systematic test of all features, but so far everythin...

Re: Wanted: Alpine Software ALPS & 4thD Cyber Chess

I may have a copy of Cyber Chess for you. I sent you a PM. Many thanks for this kind offer DutchAcorn! I’ve received your PM, but unfortunately I haven’t yet earned the right to PM you a reply (not enough posts, though I’m surely getting closer) - anyhow, I’ll be very happy to take you up on your o...

Re: Wanted: Alpine Software ALPS & 4thD Cyber Chess

Hi Phil - Fantastic that you found your pdfs of the manuals, and thanks for sharing! No worries at all re my purchase of ALPS, as I'm delighted to have an original boxed set from CJE! as for the ALPS Support Disc, the file on my ALPS disc lists the support disc as including: Compact - to compact 'Sp...

Re: Wanted: Alpine Software ALPS & 4thD Cyber Chess

Thanks again Phil! =D> So, attached below is a !Spark Archive file containing an image of the ALPS disc that I received from CJE. I've tested this disc image, and it works with ADFFS, so it should be possible to run on VirtualRPC, and other emulators! Lastly, I note the file on the disc describing t...

Hi Phil! Many thanks for your reply to Lurkio’s PM (and thanks to Lurkio for the PM!), and no worries re lost email....my own inbox is, erm, somewhat less than completely organised... And many thanks for your generosity in giving permission for the Arch ALPS to be archived - I don’t know if ALPS wou...

Re: Wanted: Alpine Software ALPS & 4thD Cyber Chess

Well, CJE have come up trumps! They found an old Archimedes ALPS package when looking for something else, so I've been able to buy this from them. The package contains the manuals, and what I think was the last version of the ALPS software, version 5.12a from August 1995. I did contact GuitarPhil, f...

Re: Another A5000 restoration....

I had the same thought as you, flaxcottage! I’ve been testing the floppy and IDE with some new(ish) cables that work fine with my other bits of Acorn kit, rather than with the somewhat less new cables that arrived with my A5000 - I do continue to suspect that it’s some of the crusty ICs that are beh...

Re: MiniPro TL866 Eprom Programmer

I’ve used one a few times without any problems on a Win7 netbook - I just downloaded the software (from the same place as your link, as far as I can remember) - I did update the firmware though, as soon as I got the device, and before I started using it to burn any EPROMs - have you tried updating t...

Re: Another A5000 restoration....

DutchAcorn - many thanks for your advice! Sounds like a good plan - looks like I’ll need to get set up for dealing with surface mount rework....slightly daunting but also quite exciting at the same time... philb - after my first successful del-power on, *st. showed floppies set to 1, just as you tho...

Re: Another A5000 restoration....

Thanks for getting back to me steve3000! I’m really enjoying working on this A5000, especially now that I’ve made some progress in getting it functioning again... re the IDE problem - as the floppy and the IDE systems appear to be the only non-functioning systems I’d wondered whether they were linke...

Another A5000 restoration....

I'm trying to restore an A5000 which has suffered battery damage to the PCB. I received the machine after someone else had done a bit of a clean up of the PCB, and had replaced the CMOS battery. At that point, the machine was non functioning. There was no video output (though perhaps that's not stri...

Re: Wanted: Alpine Software ALPS & 4thD Cyber Chess

Many thanks for the pointer Lurkio - I can't PM GuitarPhil, but following the link to his blog I can see an email address for him, so I'll contact him that way. Skimming over the previous ALPS thread and the blog I think that it's not looking too hopeful for the Arc version. I'll report back with an...

Wanted: Alpine Software ALPS & 4thD Cyber Chess

I've been hunting for a couple of Archimedes/RISC OS programs for a while now, without success. I'm looking for a copy of Alpine Software's ALPS Adventure Game Designer - even CJE Micros no long have this in stock - I've been able to download the ALPS demo disc from the Internet Archive Wayback Mach...

Re: RemoteFS - Parallel

RemoteFS looks very nice, and it's a shame that's not been updated. RSDFS sounds intriguing; I found a nice review of this software in Arm Club's Eureka magazine ( https://armclub.org.uk/eureka/eureka20.pdf ), and it looks like RSDFS is still available to buy from CJE Micros. There are some freely a...

There's a recent episode from the 8-bit guy on YouTube that addresses this very issue:

he talks about retrobrite streaking towards the end of the video.
