Re: Proposal: ABUG London and International

Sadly, at the last minute, the Basingstoke Country Hotel changed their mind and decided they wanted to charge something that was way beyond our budget and they weren't prepared to negotiate. I am going to look for alternative venues. I would be grateful if anyone has any suggestions. Doesn't ...

Re: LOL DESCRIPTION

I'm not at all sure about this. It is a legitimate limited company. That means that no one else is entitled to register a corporation in the UK in that name. But it would not mean that you would get the IP associated with Acorn Computers. So you may not be able to legitimately use (or protect) the A...

Maker Faire UK, Newcastle, Spring 2018

Yesterday, I attended Maker Faire UK 2017 at the Life Science Centre in Newcastle. It was an interesting mix of exhibits. It was very much a family event and activities were often targetted at novices and children. There were many projects involving coding, Raspberry Pis, Arduinos, 'robotics' (I use...

Re: New Acorn 8bit? Should there be one?

Sorry if this is off-topic. I was thinking the other day, maybe it would be cool to design/create a whole new 8 bit computer, using commonly available components like TTL logic chips and stuff like that. It would be designed to be simple as possible without compromising on functionality, so novice ...

Re: Proposal: ABUG London and International

I plan to book some dates in the next few days unless people have any concerns about this venue or the location generally. The dates I am looking at are 16 to 18 March 2018.

Please let me know if you have any comments or concerns.

Re: Proposal: ABUG London and International

I went to visit the Basingstoke Country Hotel today. https://www.britanniahotels.com/hotels/basingstoke-country-hotel. Google Maps it seems to be a pretty good venue. We will have access to a much larger room than we normally have, so there shouldn't be an issue with our having to limit numbers or s...

Re: BBC native code to github?

You can post any code you like on GitHub. If it recognises the language it does syntax highlighting. But it will work fine with any language, displaying it as formatted text. It will still track and display the changes between commits. In my BeebOPL project, I kept the BeebAsm 6502 code up-to-date a...

Re: Model B paged ROM breakout board. Interest?

I'd probably be interested in a board if the price is not too high. Would be nice to see the design before committing. Would probably source my own components (but again, price is a factor). As you suggest, even if there is an 80% failure rate on fake ZIFs they are still cheaper.

Re: Model B paged ROM breakout board. Interest?

I bought a cheap Chinese ZIF socket. It took 2 days to fall apart. It was from a very popular eBay vendor. I wouldn't buy anything overly mechanical from China. Paid the premium for a genuine 3M part. Build quality was like chalk and cheese. This is purely my anecdote. Others may have had different ...

Re: ABUG EAST MIDLANDS (Winter Warmer) 17-19 November 2017 (Leicestershire)

For me, the best part of these events is the social/interactive/collaborative stuff. I say that knowing that, at times, I am guilty of having become rather too engrossed in the project I am working on to the detriment of socialising. However, we use the rooms, it is important that we don't divide in...

I haven't run it for the best part of a year because I have been using the Windows version. So I just downloaded the latest version from your website. Re: Proposal: ABUG London and International

There were two things I had hoped to achieve. One was to find a venue that is more readily accessible to those of a more southerly or western disposition. Basingstoke clearly fits that bill. However, I had originally suggested Heathrow in the hope of achieving my second aim, namely attracting some o...
