Re: LCD TVs and monitors for use with BBCs

Samsung's website does state that using 4:3 mode for prolonged periods is not recommended as this may cause problems with the TV. I've never heard that one before  I do know that some TV manufacturers cite DOG's (Digital On-Screen Graphic) as a problem in instructions and manuals. But most b...

Re: How to modify your MMC Games Menu

I also might have a look at making a WiFi/SDCard interface like chinnyhill10 mentioned. If anyone has been on my personal Twitter this evening, they'll have seen me wet myself in excitement as someone 40 miles away resets my CPC and uploads files directly onto it. Just amazing. And it's am ARM proc...

Re: Retrobrite streaking

Thank you both. The video was particularly interesting. I think I'd agree with his choice of words - my Master looks worse now it's been Retrobrited. I ordered five litres of hydrogen peroxide from eBay last night, so I can try immersing instead. I find the wrapping a bit difficult - clingfilm isn'...

Re: How to modify your MMC Games Menu

I love my MMC but goodness me it's hard to get a new game onto the menu. So much so if I'm doing a review and its not on there I'll opt for tape loading instead. The Beeb led the way with SD card access. First 8 bit system I had a solid state drive in. But the ease of use of the MMC system now lags ...

No. It's on the list of potential things to do. But my S-Video capture is clean so that's the main thing.

Re: Commodore 64

The OP only wants a setup for his wife (and him) for games usage ... an Ultimate 1541 is a bit of an overkill in that regard. :D Indeed. I own an Ultimate 2 and an SD2IEC While the Ultimate 2 is lovely, it is very expensive and does stuff the average games player won't care less about. The SD2IEC i...

Re: Remarkable videos recently posted on Youtube

Thanks for the review, the beeb doesn't get much love on youtube and I think you were very fair. You might have a preference for the MSX and a strange dislike of the BREAK key, which is invaluable for writing assembler with the built in assembler, but it didn't detract from the review for me. Only ...

Be brave! Just cautious as I rely on that card so much for the Youtube channel. It's not like the Spectrum where it's a quick and easy operation. Perhaps if I'm feeling brave over the weekend but my instinct says "leave alone". Wish the Beeb had a solution where you could run an SD...

Re: Electron Power Supply

Memotech used an external PSU that is just a transformer, but that one has multiple tappings (outputs). There may be other reasons. Of course, there are some disadvantages as well. Mark Picked up a Tandy Colour 2 this week on Ebay for next to nothing. Listed as having no power supply. Turned up, on...

Re: Electron Power Supply

If your Elk works fine, then don't worry about it. But I just wanted to clear up the electrical theory and practice  The 18V AC lines on the expansion port are normally only used when a Plus 3 is attached, because the Plus 3 then supplies the Elk with power, with a higher current (higher powe...

Re: Electron Power Supply

Running my Elk on a 9v DC 2 amp supply and it's fine. According to someone I spoke to last year, 9V is the idea voltage if you are looking to run a DC supply instead of an AC supply. The rectifier won't get any warmer than if using 18v AC so I was told. May all be rubbish but the Elk is stable, fine...

It's odd, but though I would have assumed those L* parts are inductors I'm pretty sure they are just links. Perhaps someone more familiar with old schematics can have a look, because they are marked in an unusual way, but they don't appear to have any function: A3000 mouse socket.png R7 is a 180R r...

A set of "jewellers" small screwdrivers, well the flat bladed ones are a handy size for digging rubbish out of places as well. Mark Had a set with me but wasn't making an impact on the green inside the connector. Was thinking of finding some fine sandpaper wrap around the smaller screwdri...

Re: Battery Damage - A3000

Looking more closely at your photo, the damage does not look too bad. :D R7 is in series with the battery so when you renew the battery it would be possible to install the resistor off board. Make sure you clean up those sockets for the keyboard membranes. This machine looks fixable. Didn't have an...

Re: Battery Damage - A3000

Good news... The "L" things are simply links, otherwise known as zero ohm resistors. They physically resemble resistors, but you can replace them with wire links. That should be within your soldering skills hopefully. As for the SMD item, that will be a resistor. But there are some redund...

The items with a 'L' prefix are RF chokes / inductors, not resistors. Really need the schematic and parts list to know their values and properties. Mark Thanks. Battery Damage - A3000

Hi, Some of you may possibly know I run a Youtube channel devoted to using original hardware. At the weekend an A3000, monitor and loads of stuff turn...

ChinnyVision: Elk teardown and review

Something slightly new for ChinnyVision. Instead of reviewing games using the original hardware I've attempted a teardown and a system overview of the Elk. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbG_zlYPXxY It's somewhat an experiment and departure. The teardown isn't in huge detail but there is a glimpse ...

Why did Ultimate not release Underwurlde / "Sabre Wulf 2" for beeb :?: The CPC didn't get a version either which is odd considering a port from the Spectrum would have been fairly trivial and Ultimate produce CPC games after this. Perhaps it didn't perform as well as expected on the Spect...

My eyes nearly leapt from their sockets in horror! Chunky (albeit colourful) graphics and Jet Pac misses the original's ability to hover by using the down control.
