Re: Exidy Sorcerer II with S-100 Expansion Unit

The read logic of the disk drive has failed. I tracked down the probable cause of the fault: the 15uF capacitor in the picture had shorted, taking out the inductor next to it. The inductor no longer conducts. failed marked.jpg So now I'm looking for replacements. I am not at all familiar with induct...

Re: DFS fault codes

Thanks all! The fault is caused by the fact that there is no data sent from the disc drive to the computer / controller. None at all... The interface is quite simple but the PCB does the translation from reading the magnetic flux changes on the diskette, amplifying it, filtering it, detecting crosso...

Re: Where to start resurrecting a RiscPC 700

Welcome VectorEyes, and good luck with cleaning the PCB! You may also need to replace some components. The CMOS chip is sensitive to the alkali attack of the battery but you can still get them. We have seen some other repairs on the forum, so share your findings and we can help you along.

Re: Exidy Sorcerer II with S-100 Expansion Unit

Oh yes, Paul, I have one of those (with a faulty disk drive). It's a Liveport FDM 180 and it contains a boot ROM, so is connected to the bus at the back of the Sorcerer. The problem is that I cannot see all of the boot code, probably because some chip is bad on the drive or the connections are dodg...

Re: DFS fault codes

Thanks Bill! The document does not say if these are reported as disk fault or drive fault. Perhaps only the reported code is relevant? I also believe there are more errors than these? I have found a code 16 (write fault) and 12 (write protect). And of course there are the file system errors such as ...

DFS fault codes

I have a faulty 40T single sided drive that I am hoping to fix. It came with an Exidy Sorcerer . Trying to get catalogue a disc with it using a BBC fitted with DFS 1.2, it moves the head to track 0 and after some time it returns the error "Disk fault 18 at 00"/00. It would help finding the...

Re: Exidy Sorcerer II with S-100 Expansion Unit

Ok, BASIC pac is fixed. For some reason the ROM pac does not like some EPROMs as much as others. In the end I found 2 in the 10 EPROMs I have that work (different types). As Tezza mentiones on his site pin 21 of the EPROM needs to be connected to 5V. I choose not to alter the ROM pac PCB but make th...

Re: Exidy Sorcerer II with S-100 Expansion Unit

Some progress. I got some other 2716 EPROMs, old ones (SGS 2716-1F1). These also verify on the programmer and give corrupted data when accessed in the Sorcerer's BASIC Pac, but once I heat them up with a hair dryer they shape up and work fine! basic pac.jpg So what does this tell me? Do I need yet o...

Stickers on PCB

I've never given these much attention, but in an issue 7 Model B I serviced today I found so many that I started to wonder: round stickers with names and initials. stickers2.jpg stickers1.jpg Tracey, Jill, MP, MA, etc. Nine of them. I can't imagine there were so many people involved assembling these...

Re: MMC card interface

This looks clean, and there is no soldering required, but I've made a few of these and in my experience this configuration can give connection issues over time. The IDC connection is ok for a straight flat cable, but with twists and turns in the individual wires it is not so great. Imo soldering on ...

Just to make a cross reference to the other thread on this upgrade: http://stardot.org.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=9483#p110586 . You'll notice that, although you put in an extra 92K of RAM, the startup banner does not say "160K". Strangely, as JGH pointed out, the DFS scans for the ...

Re: A5000 woes

A corrupted CMOS chip can prevent the computer from starting. Instead of replacing the cmos chip, you could just snip leg 8 of the chip (+5V) and see if it starts. In my experience the A5000 will boot to supervisor if the CMOS chip is removed. The configuration you end up with a dead CMOS chip typic...

Re: BBC Micro MMC Card adapter - compatible cards

Making a backup of the TurboMMC EPROM is good to get to know the BBC a bit better but imo it is not really necessary. You should be fine for decades with the EPROM. I'll send you a copy of the ROM image through a PM. I will also include a link to download the TurboMMC support CD. Edit: I already pos...

Re: Video fault

It has worked before, right? So it is unlikely that a wire link is made to the wrong socket / pin?

If it is still playing up after removing the S26 link, is IC2 worth checking for it’s connection in the socket and bad joints where the socket of IC2 is soldered on the PCB?

Star Gemini 10x printer repair

I recently acquired a Star Gemini 10x which brings back memories as it was the printer I used BITD. The printer works except for the ribbon spool mechanism. It looks as if a spring has sprung. Thanks. I seems just heating the legs of the keys makes a difference. :D Once you desolder them you might as well take the trouble of cleaning the pins. It's not much extra work and is more durable than hammering. They are easily unscrewed, you can simply scratch off the tarnish with a sharp knife....

Hi Marcus, I don't think so. Can't remember if I tried that? It goes through the format with the hex numbers on screen in about a second but the FDD does nothing. The instructions say it won't work without that command but I couldn't get the command to disable the MMC ROM... Cheers :) You should no...
